Why do we give grades? What purposes do they serve?

  • We disagree on the purpose and we disagree on what constitutes grades. It sends a mixed message to students.

  • Just as we recognize that it is difficult for administrators to be both advocates for and evaluators of teachers, so, too, is it difficult for teachers to be advocates for students while also serving as their evaluators. Yet we don't recognize this dilemma.

  • Faculty must have a consensus on the purpose of grading within a school/district.

Reflections:
Guskey's talk really caused me to examine and rethink my beliefs about the purposes of grading. It was so thought-provoking that it sparked some intellectual conversation on Facebook.
